3 Summer Pool Safety Tips for Parents

School is almost over, and many of us will go from spending our days inside worrying about our children studying, to poolside worrying about them using the right SPF. However, there are other things to keep in mind besides a nasty burn. The pool or beach can become a dangerous place very quickly if the rules of water safety are not followed. Here are some tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission to keeping your summer at the pool a safe one:

1. Stay close, be alert and watch your children in and around the pool

  • Never leave your child unattended at the pool
  • Teach your children basic water safety tips
  • Keep them away from pool drains and pipes
  • If you can’t find your child, look for them in the pool first
  • Have the right equipment for your trip to the pool

2. Keep a fence around any backyard pool with self-latching gates and door alarms

  • Install pool alarms to let you know when your kids go near the water
  • Make sure any pool you are using has the proper drain covers
  • Keep pool covers in good working condition

3. Learn and practice water safety skills, like how to swim and CPR

  • Make sure to teach your children and yourself the basics of life-saving skills
  • Stay updated with safety skills

Make sure to share these safety tips with your friends to ensure everyone has a safe summer at the pool!

Door alarms for your pool fence is a cheap and excellent way to stay alert to any activity around the pool, something that all parents with young children (and a pool) desperately need. Great advice, I’ll be sure to share the door alarm tip with my girlfriends with kids.
