4 Tips to Avoid Hidden Holiday Dangers for Baby

December 11, 2012 Child Safety, Holidays, Home 5 Comments

Holiday times bring holiday cheer and some holiday hazards, but these few precautions can help keep your little ones a little safer.

  1. Candles – Who doesn’t love holiday scented candles? They are beautiful, but are a fire and burn hazard for children who can pull them down. Be sure they are up high out of your children’s reach and not on a table with a cloth that a child can pull on and tip the candle over. No-flame candles are the best option.
  2. Trees – O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree how lovely and temping are your branches! Keep glass and sharp ornaments higher up on the tree out of a child’s reach. Anchor your tree or put up baby gates. If your baby is learning to pull up, a tree branch is a temping “help” to pull up.
  3. Gifts – You are busy wrapping gifts and have a pile of paper, scissors and tape that will tempt any toddler. Be sure to wrap gifts away from children so they can’t grab scissors, small parts or other sharp objects while you are wrapping. Also holiday ribbon can be a choking hazard, be sure to keep it far away from curious children.
  4. Food – We all love to gather with family around the table. While the preparations are going on & everyone is busy in the kitchen, be sure to designate someone to watch children and keep them out of the kitchen where there are dangers with knives and hot dishes.

Great tips! We struggled with the tree during our little one’s first Christmas because she kept trying to get the ornaments.

Great tips. I am a nervous wreck around the holidays with my toddler trying to get into everything

  3. Thanks for the tips. I replaced all of my beautiful scented candles with the battery powered unscented ones for our holiday dinner. Avoid allergies, burns and accidents with the babies ;) )
