Easy Snowman Craft and Recipe for Children

January 7, 2011 24 Comments

After all the excitement of the holidays, you may be hearing from your children “I’m bored!”  This snowman craft will surely keep them entertained and snowman soup will keep them warm while crafting!

What you need:

  1. Cotton balls (about 40 per snowman)
  2. Blue construction paper (1 sheet per child)
  3. Black construction paper or googly eyes
  4. Orange construction paper or pom poms
  5. Non-toxic glue
  6. Scissors for adult use only

Instructions:

  1. Squeeze some glue onto a paper plate  and let the children scoop bits of glue with a popsicle stick because squeezing glue right onto the paper can get messy. Glue sticks are a great “not-so-messy” alternative.
  2. Have the children glue cotton balls in two or three stacked circles to make a snowman shape
  3. Cut out construction paper shapes if you are not using googly eyes or colored pom poms  (adults can do this prior to craft time for young children)

BLACK: 5 large circles per snowman (2 eyes and 3 buttons)
BLACK: 5 small circles per snowman (for the mouth)
BLACK: hat shape (rectangle with a square on top)
ORANGE: Cut out one triangle per snowman (nose)
ORANGE (or brown): Long rectangle shapes (arms)

*We used colored pom pom balls instead of construction paper

5. Have the children glue their snowman faces, buttons, hat and arms to their cotton ball snowman.

Snowman Soup

Ingredients:

  1. Packet of hot chocolate
  2. Chocolate kiss
  3. Marshmallows
  4. Candy cane
  5. Sandwich bag
  6. Note paper

What to Do:

Put the ingredients in a sandwich bag with a note to your child that this is snowman soup eaten by many famous snowmen families such as Frosty the Snowman’s family. To make their snowman soup just add contents (except for the candy cane) in a mug, add boiling water and have them stir it with the candy cane.

Winter Craft for Your Child

December 3, 2010 67 Comments

In some places around the world, the winter wonderland landscapes have begun to be formed! No matter if you live in cold or warm weather, this winter children’s craft will be sure to make your children smile!

What you’ll need:

  1. 1 sheet blue construction paper (or if your child wants to use a different color, we say “Why not?” Let him express his creativity!)
  2. Construction paper: black, white, orange, and red/pink
  3. Pencil
  4. Non- Toxic glue stick
  5. Black marker

How to make it:

  1. Trace outline of penguin on piece of paper. If you think your child can do it, let her do it. Just draw a tall hump with a half circle on the bottom for the feet.
  2. Add a simple line behind the penguin’s body, just a few inches above the penguin’s foot to make it look like the penguin is standing on the ground.
  3. Tear white and black construction paper into strips, and then into squares.
  4. Apply glue with glue stick to small areas of the blue paper, using your tracing as a guide.  Start building the “ground” first, pressing white paper scraps in place.
  5. Work in small areas so glue doesn’t dry before you get to it & press on all the black paper areas. Finish with the white area in the center of the penguin.
  6. Tear or cut out a triangle beak from the orange paper and glue on to the face. Use black marker to add eyes. Tear or cut out a bow  from pink paper and glue it on top of penguins head (for a boy place it under the neck like a tie).

Family Gratitude Keepsake & Easy Turkey Craft for Kids

November 24, 2010 11 Comments

It’s the day before families gather nationwide to pause and be grateful. In the midst of our crazy, hectic schedules  it’s easy to forget all the blessings we have. One idea to remember your blessings from year to year is to start a Family Gratitude Book. At Thanksgiving each member of the family writes in the book what she or he is grateful for. Make sure you write the date at the top of the list. Year after year, you will be adding memories that you can look back on and remember. It is especially rewarding to remember what kids wrote when they were little (especially if now they are grown up with their own children) or what family members who have passed on have written. Your Family Gratitude Book becomes an heirloom for many generations.

Supplies for Family Gratitude Book:

  1. Notebook or Journal
  2. Pen
  3. Grateful Heart

Decorate Your Thanksgiving Table

If you would like little place holders or an easy-to-do craft for your kids, how about a Turkey made from a toilet paper tube?

Supplies for the Turkey toilet paper tube craft:

  1. Construction paper
  2. Markers, crayons or non-toxic paint
  3. Toilet paper tube
  4. Scissors (to be used by adults)
  5. Non-toxic glue
  6. Wiggly eyes (not to be used by children under 3 years of age)

Directions:

  1. Cut feathers out of the construction paper
  2. Cut feet & beak from construction paper
  3. Glue feathers, feet, beak and wiggly eyes to the toilet paper tube. Toilet paper tube should be “standing” up vertically.
  4. Color Turkey as desired.

What fun Thanksgiving ideas do you have?
