Learning Alphabet Letters At the Zoo

September 5, 2012 Activities 39 Comments

Learning letters at the zoo. Our trip was sponsored by the letter M & S!

We love getting outside with our kids to run, play and use our imaginations. We also love to learn while we are outside like taking nature walks and learning colors or going to the zoo and learning alphabet letters. This easy activity is fun and educational.

What you need:

  1. A letter of the day. Everyone can have their own or you can have one letter for everyone.
  2. Marker and paper to make the letter.
  3. Camera or camera phone.
  4. Zoo
  5. Notebook
  6. A sense of adventure and fun!

What to do:

  1. Pick a letter (we picked them out of a hat)
  2. That is your special letter for the day. Be on the lookout for animals, food, colors, expressions, etc. that start with your special letter. We had “S” and “M“. We saw slithering snakes, swimming sharks, sweaty kids :) , mini-monkeys, cows that mooed and so much more. When we had our sandwiches at lunch we said, “MMMMMM good”.
  3. Take pictures of your letter in front of animals, etc. and keep an alphabet journal.
  4. Enjoy looking back on your journal as you see all the letter adventures you had!

This is such a great idea! We go to our zoo frequently and this will give us a fun and different way to see the zoo and get more out of our visit.

Love this! We have zoo passes and going there so often can get boring sometimes so this is a great idea to make it exciting! Thank you!

  5. Love this idea – will definitely have to do it next time. Numbers would also work with counting the number of animals you see.

  6. I love this idea! We were just at the zoo this weekend. We’ll definitely need to try this next time.

  7. What a cute idea! I love activities that make learning fun! We’re going to a petting zoo next week so this is perfect!

Very Fun idea! We may try this on our weekly walk to the Library too! ( I only thought of that because our library has staues of animals and my son calls it the zoo!) lol

What a great way to learn letters! We are working on letter identification right now and I’ve been struggling to keep my three year old son’s attention. This is a great way to make it fun, keep him engaged, and learn those letters!

What a great idea! And I’m sure you could do the same thing on other trips too – like car trips! We’ll have to try this sometime.

  12. That reminds me of our kid’s preschool ciriculum LONG ago (now are 13-21 in age):)
Letters and sounds are so much easier and fun when learned with a fun activity.

Another is to pick a letter out of a hat, and if you can’t make it to the zoo or other location, just use that letter for the day. For instance \P\ can be, peanut butter, pickles, pizza to eat, go to the PARK, wear Party hats or be a Princess for the day. Some letters are hard to find things for, so those days you might want to pick two. Fun times!
