Martin Luther King Day, Elmo and Parenthood

January 17, 2011 Honoring Parents 19 Comments

Today we interrupt our normal Mom Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. – a man who gave his life to promote that all people are created equal and deserve respect no matter race, religion, creed, etc. This holiday isn’t just a day off school or work, but a great opportunity for us as parents to teach our children the beauty of differences and the importance of accepting people and loving them even if they are different than us.

Here at Kolcraft we love Elmo and the many different things he teaches our children from potty training to how to say their ABC’s. Today Elmo joins us in celebrating Martin Luther King Day as he and Whoopi Goldberg talk about the beauty of their differences.

Today is a great day to watch this Elmo clip with your child and just very simply talk about the lessons Elmo learns about the beauty of being different.

  1. We have this clip on a best of Elmo DVD. It is so cute and very true. I love it. We should all celebrate our differences instead of fearing them!

  4. My daughter is doing her student teaching with a fourth grade class. She did a special MLK Day project with them. I was amazed at what the kids already knew about him, and about their deep thoughts on the man and what he stood for.
