It’s National Screen Free Week and one thing you can replace screen time with is a garden! Gardens are a great way to connect with your children, have fresh food or flowers, build memories and connect with nature. We were talking here at Kolcraft about gardens. Some of us have great memories of picking tomatoes with dad and how excited he would get over the “big ones” or going to grandma’s to pick fresh strawberries or the joy on their children’s faces when the seeds begin to bloom.
This week is national Screen Free Week which we think is a fabulous idea. For many of us, media time has become part of our daily family living whether it’s computers, smartphones, DVDs, the Cloud or whatever is at our virtual fingertips. Let’s face it, sometimes screen time can calm down a restless toddler at a doctor’s office, can distract kids on long trips or can even be a learning tool. However, there is something to say for turning off the screen – no matter what size – and playing outside, using imagination for play, reading a book together even as a family or having family game time.
