Kid’s Easy To Make Bird Feeder

Friday, August 19th, 2011

By now you know how much we support wildlife and how many benefits there are for children to be outdoors. We love this easy-to-do bird feeder that helps your kids be creative and gives them more opportunities to get close to nature.

What you need:

  1. Pine cones
  2. Peanut butter
  3. Spoon
  4. Newspaper
  5. Birdseed
  6. String

What to do:

  1. Put down newspaper so you don’t get your table all full of peanut butter.
  2. Tie a string on the top of the pine cone.
  3. Take a spoon and spread peanut butter on the pine cone. (You can also use a butter knife if your child is old enough)
  4. Roll pine cone in the birdseed.
  5. Hang up pine cones in trees or near windows.

Keep a little notebook by the window to use as bird log. Whenever someone sees a bird eating out of the “feeder” they can record it and share their sightings with the family.

5 Ways to Unlock Your Child’s Imagination Through Art

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Last Friday we blogged about unlocking your child’s imagination at the Disney Imagination Center. (Wally is already asking when he can return to the Disney Imagination Center for a play date with Jiminy Cricket. :) ) Today we are exploring opening your child’s imagination through art.

There are many ways you can help your child get in touch with her inner artist.

  1. Coloring Books – While coloring books have been a go-to staple for years, they allow your child to “put color on paper” and explore the possibilities of making drawings come alive.
  2. Blank Paper with a Squiggly Line - Draw a squiggly line on a piece of paper and give it to your little one. Ask them if they can make that squiggly line into something. It’s fun to watch their drawing come together as that line becomes part of a tree, animal, etc. (Let them draw a squiggly line on paper for you to create art too!)
  3. Test Different Mediums – Give your child non-toxic finger paint, markers, crayons, etc. and let them use all these different art mediums to create a masterpiece. You can even use different fabrics, paper sources, etc. to use in their art exploration.
  4. Introduce Your Child to Different Artists – There is a wonderful series of books that help your child get to know famous artists in a fun way. Making these artists “familiar” helps your child realize that he too can be an artists in his own way!
  5. Take Your Child to an Art Museum – Many cities have special art museums just for kids! Your city doesn’t have one? No problem! Your child will love the online art museums that not only introduce them to famous artists, but let them create some masterpieces of their own!

What ways do you help unlock your child’s imagination through art?

Labor Day Family Fun

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Labor day marks the unofficial end of summer so we wanted to give some family-friendly activities that you can enjoy over this holiday weekend.

Beach picnic – Fill your beach bag with beach toys, sunscreen and towels and head over to the beach for one last summer splash.

BBQ – Fire up the grill and enjoy family favorites like barbecued chicken, hot dogs, burgers, corn on the cob and macaroni salad.

End of Summer Scenic Drive - Take advantage of the last days of green scenery before the leaves start to fall and check out some of your local towns or hot spots.

Ice-cream party - While ice-cream can definitely be an all year long treat. It has special significance for summer. “Toast” summer with some fun shakes or an ice-cream bar where your kids can create their own sundaes. Don’t forget to have some fruit as ice-cream toppings.

One of our favorite ice-cream creations :)

What you will need:

  • milk
  • vanilla ice cream
  • whipped cream
  • food coloring
  • ice cubes
  • seedless red cherries with stems
  • sprinkles
  • straws

Directions:

  • Put two scoops of ice cream and about 2 cups of milk into blender. Bend for about 30 seconds.
  • Add a couple ice cubes and a few drops of food coloring and blend for another 30 seconds. Add a little more coloring if you need to.
  • Pour into tall clear glass.
  • Add whipped cream to the top of the shake.
  • Add some festive sprinkles and top off with a cherry
  • Enjoy!

*We like to use frozen yogurt instead of ice-cream and fruit instead of food coloring. It does the trick and is healthier. :)

What fun things are you doing as a family this Labor Day Holiday?
