5 Tips To Stop Your Child From Biting

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

It’s that phase of growth that every parent dreads along with your baby cutting teeth – biting. With these 5 helpful tips you can teach your child to stop biting and start hugging!

  1. Take the Attention Away from the Biter - Comfort the victim of the bite especially if it is another child. This will turn the attention away from the “wrong-doer” who may be biting for negative attention. If you are the one who is bitten, rub the spot where your child has bitten you and say that it hurts.
  2. Be Firm & Direct – Children don’t understand long explanations. Firmly and directly say, “Biting hurts!” or “No Biting!” Be calm, firm and direct when saying this.
  3. Teach Alternatives – Tell your child that we don’t bite, we can express ourselves in other ways like saying, “That’s mine.” Or teach them nice touches. After your child bites say, “We don’t bite, we HUG.” And hug your child.
  4. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat – Your child learns through repetition. Be sure to be consistent in your message of no biting and repeat it every time your child bites. Make sure other caregivers do the same.
  5. Pay Attention to Patterns – Try to see why your child is biting. Is she overtired? Is she hungry? Finding a pattern can help you deter that behavior in the future.

What tips do you have to stop children from biting?

Grateful for our 2011 Parenting Journey

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

We have so much to be grateful for here at Baby Matters blog as we look back at 2011. We have met so many wonderful moms during our Mom Mondays, we have shared and received great parenting tips on everything from how to keep fit with your kids to how to prevent colds and flu on Tip Tuesdays. On Wednesday Wonders we have had fun crafts, recipes and enjoyed a parenting take on pop culture. Remember our princess crib mattress giveaway to honor the Royal Wedding? :) On Kolcraft Thursdays we have taken a look behind the scenes of how we make products, we have introduced new products such as our Contours© Optima tandem stroller and our Wally Wonderbug activity center and have had fun contests. On Fun Fridays we have kept abreast of holidays and how to celebrate them with your children as well as posted ways to learn and have fun with your family in everyday circumstances.

We had fun getting to know all of you in 2011. We look forward to our 2012 parenting journey with you!

Thanks for being a Baby Matters Blog fan!

Kid Friendly Picnic

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Summer may be nearing its end, but there is still time to have a fun picnic with your kids! We have a few ideas for packing a family-friendly picnic that everyone can enjoy.

Picnic Tips and Ideas:

  1. Helping Hands – Have everyone in charge of at least one thing such as packing the blanket or napkins. This way even the smallest child can feel part of the picnic planing.
  2. Themes – Choose a theme such as a color, or shape, or animal. For example if you choose yellow as your theme,  you can include foods that are yellow (lemonade, cheese and crackers, etc.), play games that include yellow toys (frisbees, a yellow ball, etc.), dress in yellow or have yellow plates & napkins, etc.
  3. Games - Pick games that everyone can play whether that be hide and seek, a scavenger hunt, catch,  potato sack races or I’m going on a picnic ABC game. (First person says “I’m going on a picnic & I’m bringing _____ and they mention something starting with A. The next person says I’m going on a picnic & they have to repeat the A item that is being brought and add an item that starts with B. The next person has to Repeat the phrase with the A & B items & then add an item that begins with C.  See how far you can get through the alphabet doing this.)
  4. Relax – Allow some time to just rest and talk or for your children to play on their own minus portable electronics. There are many health benefits to being outside unplugged.

Do you have any fun picnic ideas to share?

How To Balance Work and Parenting

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Balancing work and parenting is an on-going process and it certainly isn’t easy, but it can be done! We have 7 tips from our Kolcraft Moms who work outside the home. Please add your own tips in the comment section!

  1. Be realistic - You CANNOT do it all: be the perfect mom,  perfect wife and perfect employee, have a perfectly clean house, make homemade meals from scratch every night, workout every day and still have a smile on your face at 11 pm. It’s not going to happen. And the good thing? You don’t have to do it all, to do most things well. All the childcare and home responsibilities can’t be entirely yours. Divide things up with your significant other or other family helpers.
  2. Be organized – It’s harder to get things done when you are searching through stacks of paper or don’t have within reach what you need to get your job done. Take the time to get organized before you dive back into work. Clean your work area and make a list of goals and break them down into manageable tasks.
  3. Be kind - You will constantly be giving to others – your boss, customers, your spouse, your kids, but you don’t have an endless supply of energy or effort. Be sure to take care of you and be kind to yourself. It may be as simple as taking a bubble bath or taking 10 minutes to enjoy a good cup of coffee – whatever you need to recharge your battery. Just make sure to build some “me” time into your schedule.
  4. Be grateful – Take the time to appreciate those little moments that you have with your family. You don’t need a wonderful vacation to be able to enjoy family time (although that is always nice). Every day there will be moments that you can connect with you children whether that be at a meal, a bedtime story, really enjoying their hugs and kisses, etc.
  5. Be online – If you can afford it, see what  services can help you with everyday chores. Perhaps it’s getting your groceries delivered through an online service like PeaPod or online dry cleaners, etc. With just a click of the mouse you will be able to get household chores done!
  6. Be present- Children are resilient and what is more important than mommy time 24/7 is that when you are with your children, they have your undivided attention. Remember that seeing you happy and satisfied with your life is an even greater teacher to them as you being home with them all the time.
  7. Be forgiving – No matter how organized or how good your intentions are, there will be days that everything seems to fall apart. These are the times that you have to be forgiving to yourself, your family and your employer.  Just remember that tomorrow is a new day full of opportunity.

Summer Safety Tips

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Summer brings the joy of the outdoors and in order to enjoy it safely we have to remember sun safety tips and how to avoid other summertime accidents that can put a damper on summer fun.

  1. Keep Heat in Check – Kids love to play outside and sometimes forget that with heat comes heat exhaustion. Make sure your child is constantly re-hydrating with water while playing outside.
  2. Banish Bugs – Prevent pesty mosquitoes, ticks and other bugs from having a feeding frenzy on your child. Be sure to spray them with insect repellent when they are outside during high bug times.
  3. Poison Control – make sure your children know what poison oak and poison ivy look like so they can avoid it. If they do come in contact with it, be sure to wash the area with soap and water for ten minutes and apply calamine lotion. Always call a doctor to make sure it doesn’t turn into anything serious.

What summer safety tips do you have to share?

Mom Memories

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Your child’s first steps, first words, first smile – these are precious memories you always have with you. Some people scrapbook these memories, others journal them, but how about a way to not only keep these memories but share them with family and friends?

My Mom Memories website is a way to share your memories with others, but you can also save them in your own personal memory archive as well! The best part is you can’t misplace this, it can’t get damaged by water or other household disasters!

How do you keep your mommy memories alive?

Motherhood Is Everything & More

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Cherise and her family

We recently had the opportunity to get to know Cherise from Mom and More blog. We love her excitement and love for being a mommy and finding great deals – it’s contagious! We were able to catch up with her and had to share her interview with our readers.

Cherise, you were never a blog “fanatic” & only a few years ago began blogging yourself. What inspired you to connect with other parents through a blog?

When I had my first son I was pretty much on my own, as none of our friends had kids yet. I felt like my whole life was changing diapers and feeding my baby, I didn’t have anything that I did just for myself or anyone to really talk to about being a mom. I started my blog just two months after my second child was born to have somewhere to organize my thoughts, have adult conservation (even though it was through posts, comments, and emails), and just escape for a little bit. I love reading comments from my readers, especially when I ask for help and I love to read other blogs!

You have some great reviews of various products on your blog. What is your favorite part of reviewing products?

When I started blogging I had no clue I could actually review products on my own and then once I started I got hooked! I love reviewing products because there are so many great products out there that either don’t get advertised or moms aren’t sure of. I try to post any issues I found with the product so moms know if the product would work for their own child (or themselves.) I have always been an opinionated person and have been very fortunate to work with great companies. I do want to add though that its not all fun and games, reviewing products is a lot of work as I research the company, work with PR reps, test of the product, take pictures, organize my thoughts into a blog post, include all the links and if I am including a giveaway I have to work that out.

You are expecting a baby girl. How has this pregnancy been different than your first two with boys?

With my first two pregnancies (both boys) I was hungry all the time and had tons of cravings. They were both also very active kicking me and moving around, and my belly was not as round and cute! With this baby I am not really any hungrier than usual and don’t have any odd cravings. My belly is also firmer and round, and she doesn’t move too much (yet!).

Do you have a favorite “mom moment” that you can share with us?

My favorite mom moment just happened recently. My 4 year old has had speech issues and is slowly saying new words every day. About a week ago we were watching television and he said his name “Aidan” – I was so shocked! Before then he would just say his name is “A” and now he can say his name, spell it aloud and write it! I think I may have taken those things for granted if it wasn’t such a great accomplishment for him to speak words.

As a mom of soon to be 3 little ones under 4 years old, do you have any advice for first-time parents?

Take everyday as it comes and don’t try to do so much. I have friends who plan every day with their kids with events or playdates. While I do plan things here and there, mainly we go with the flow. I try not to get mad at every little thing, but rather focus on bigger issues that are wrong. I also try to avoid housework or chores while the kids are napping and use that time for myself whether I read a book, nap, or blog!

Cherise and her boys enjoy some time at Disney!

Now for a quick glance into Cherise’s life. :)

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go & what would you do there? I would go on a cruise ship, somewhere tropical. My husband and I went on a cruise for our honeymoon and were so tired from our wedding and too many excursions that we didn’t really get to relax and enjoy it. I would love to go on a cruise, lay out by the pool, walk casually around the ports we stop at, and do some light shopping. (As fun as the excursions were on each island we stopped at, we did too much.)

What’s your guilty pleasure? Vampire books, shows and movies. I didn’t get into vampires until after the first Twilight movie came out when my tween sister begged me to watch it with her, since then I have been hooked.

What is an instant de-stressor for you? Blogging or just surfing the Internet. Just getting on the computer I usually can find something I have been searching for, find a great post to read, or blog about my own life!

If you had a free day with no obligations, what would you do with it? I would love to spend the day with my mom shopping, eating out, and getting some pampering. She works a lot and is not the type of mom to do those things.

If someone was going to write a book of your life, what would the title be? I think the name of my blog Mom and More sums up my life as a book title. I am a mom first, but I am also a wife, daughter, sister, niece, granddaughter, friend, and woman! I think it is important for moms to have something outside of just being a mom!

Hop over to Cherise’s blog – Mom & More, you will find a new friend who you we know you will enjoy getting to know!

How To Save Money on Baby and Children’s Clothes

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Do you feel like your child grows out of his clothes before you can even get the tags off? While we love to see our children grow at a healthy rate, it can be difficult on our budgets because baby and kids’ clothes are not cheap.

That is why we love the site ThredUp – a site for moms and dads like you to swap children’s clothing & toys online.

It’s easy to use:

  1. Pick a great box full of clothes for your child – just $5 plus shipping
  2. Post a box of gently-worn clothes your child no longer wears
  3. When another member picks your box of clothes, send it free of charge. ThredUp provides boxes, postage & even schedules the pick up!

What tips do you have for saving on children’s clothes?

Mom Monday Has Baby Rabies!

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Jill & her family. Photo credit Jessica Marchetti Photography.

Did you ever read something so funny that you laughed until you cried? That was all of us here at Kolcraft when we starting reading Baby Rabies blog. We completely fell in love with Jill’s honesty, sense of humor and insight. She tells the “real” story behind childbirth and parenting in a way that nobody else can. We had to have our Kolcraft fans meet her and are THRILLED to have you meet Jill – the mom behind Baby Rabies.

We LOVE your blog. You are so honest & funny. How is it that you can find so much humor in everything from birth pains to baby poop to your post-pregnancy body? Did we say we LOVE your blog? :)   I love that you love it! It’s always nice to find others who relate. That’s the main reason I blog! You know, I have to find humor in all this stuff. If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry… and I have an ugly cry. I just try to always look at life in a way that makes me smile.

How would you say motherhood has changed for you, now that you have two children? My day to day is all about balance now. It’s about weighing the needs of one child against another. I used to never let my first-born cry if I could help it. I ran to him every time he whined. Now? If my infant daughter is crying in her crib while I’m trying to get my son to the potty before he pees on the kitchen floor, well, she’s just going to have to cry. I do my best to give equal love and attention to the one who needs it most at the time, but that’s not always obvious, and that’s hard for me.

What is your favorite part of being of mom? Love. It’s always the love…the love, the smiles, the laughs, all the trite things that every mother will tell you. It’s all that.

What has been your greatest challenge as a mom? Not being so hard on myself. As a business professional, and before that as a student, I demanded a lot of myself, and I excelled at it. I was an honor’s student, I was great at what I did in the work place. I didn’t fail often, and when I did, I could fix it. As a mother, there’s no way to be perfect. There are many days I don’t excel at this job, a few that I fail. It’s hard to let myself off the hook for that, to learn from it and grow and move on.

If you could give ‘expert advice” on one aspect of parenting to new parents, what would it be? Coming from a woman who produces children who grow like my boobs produce Miracle Grow, I say don’t waste too much money on tiny clothes! They grow out of them sooooo fast, and honestly, there are so few opportunities to dress a baby up in anything more than a comfortable sleeper or onesie those first few months. Save your cash and spend it on yourself! Get a baby sitter for a night or buy some great 4th trimester transitional clothes. Consignment sales and stores are your friend.

Where do you see yourself in 25 years? A happy empty nester, finally living in that downtown, super chic condo with our fancy, expensive furniture that we never had while having kids in the house. We travel. A lot. We have a dog. We visit our children frequently, and then we return to the quiet of our little space and raise our glasses every night to the beautiful life we made for ourselves.

Jill and her two little cuties

Now for a quick glance into Jill’s life. :)

What is one thing always in your fridge? That sour cream that expired last year that my husband and I are silently arguing over who’s going to finally throw it out. Spoiler alert- it won’t be me. That and cheese. We are a cheese loving family… that hardly ever goes bad.

What is your one guilty pleasure? Just one? Goodness I have so many. Lately it’s wine and episodes of The Real Housewives of The OC, laptop up, tweeting snarky commentary.

If a genie could give you one wish but it couldn’t be immortality or 2 more wishes, what would your wish be? Health? Can it be health for my whole family? We can be broke, living in a van down by the river as long as we’re healthy. My husband and I strive to be examples of healthy living for our children. A healthy, happy family is my dream come true.

If you had a free day to yourself, how would you spend it? I would spend it dressed up, probably with heels on and impractical jewelry, carrying a purse instead of a diaper bag. I would meet up with some of my besties at a vineyard and drink some wine in the shade of a big tree in the Hill Country of Texas. I’d like to say we wouldn’t talk about our children or our husbands, but I know better than that.

If someone were going to write a book on your life, what would they title it? The Girl Who Knew Just Enough To Have It All
