Talk Like A Pirate Day Activites and Crafts for Kids

Ahoy, me hearties! Today be Talk Like a Pirate Day, so grab your lads and lassies and teach them a few phrases that pirates be saying these days!

We have a little joke for ye lassies:

How could the pirate acquire the ship so cheaply?

Because it was on sail!!

Yo ho ho! So, there be so much to do with your lads and lassies, but we favorite activity involving pirates or privateers is making pirate hats.

How to make a wee little pirate hat with your lads and lassies:

  1. Take out a piece of paper.
  2. Fold the sheet of paper in half.
  3. Fold the top corners down towards the center of the page. Your paper should be in a rough triangle shape.
  4. Lift the front bottom flap and fold that up.
  5. Flip the paper over, then lift the bottom flap and fold it up; your pirate hat should be complete!

And remember, talk like a pirate today! Arggh.

To help ye out on this fine day, we will share some great pirate phrases with ye:

Ye – you

Me – my

Ahoy, me hearties! – Hello, my friends!

Thar she blows! – Whale sighting

Seadog – old pirate or sailor

Savvy? – do you understand and do you agree?

Privateer – government-sponsored pirates

Jolly Roger – a pirate’s flag including the white skull and crossbones of a black field

Avast ye – stop and pay attention

Doubloons – coins, or coins found in pirate stashes

    How fun! I’ll have to teach my 3 year old this Pirate those words! For talk like a pirate day he dressed up and we went to krispy kreme for free doughnuts!!!

  4. Talking like a pirate seems to be universal. Everybody knows how to say a few pirate words. And it’s a great smile maker especially when you are out and about with the kids.

    So cute! My girls have pirate costumes and love to dress up in them! They have a few sayings, but a lot on your list are ones they don’t know, it’ll be fun to teach them these! :)

  9. Wow, what a great little education on proper Pirate “speak”. I had no idea what most of them mean! We missed it THIS year, but next year will have an almost two year old grandson whom comes here for care, so am sure all the kids will get in on the fun then. Have to be thinking up some ideas for a curriculum by then for the four kids here. Thanks!

    This is perfect for my son. Thanks for sharing ways to learn pirate speak, my son is fascinated by pirates and he says a few things now like “Arrgh Maties”, “Ahoy”, etc. This will be great to help me participate in on all the fun!
